A friend recently went on a 13-day rafting and camping trip in the Grand Canyon. Unfortunately, she experienced a rather bad sprain, her ankle swelling up “like a melon.” As I expressed my sympathy she smiled and said it was okay because she had “found the gift” in the experience.

She explained that as a result of her injury she was unable to go on a planned day hike. Instead, the guides helped her find a shaded, peaceful spot where she spent five hours in blissful solitude, time she chose to find deeply relaxing and fulfilling.

There is a gift to be found in virtually every situation if only we are open to seeing it.
